I wanted to be a better version of myself after the injury: Suryakumar Yadav - Times of India
NEW DELHI: World's best T20 batsman Suryakumar Yadav is back in cricket after four months - a hiatus forced by a sports hernia injury.
IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLEAs Mumbai Indians look to play a crucial match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday, the official handle of IPL shared a video in which Suryakumar talked about his comeback.
The title of the video is "I wanted to be a better version of myself after the injury".
The videos start with SKY: "It's great to be back, but most importantly, nothing beats the feeling of being back at the Wankhede."
Surya says of his time away from the game: "It's really hard to describe the last three, three and a half months, it's helped me grow as a person, grow as an athlete. It was difficult for the first two... three weeks because I felt very bored doing the same things again and again, rehabilitation, but then in the fourth week in the fifth week, I realized that it's important to keep going because it's very important for me to first decide how I wanted to come back."
"When I spoke to my wife and all the people at the NCA, they said it has to be a different version of you. You have to be a little bit different when you come back on the pitch and I started doing everything about it. Small little things like sleeping on time, having a good diet compliance, that was the most important thing I had never read a book in my life, but I also started doing that, getting up in the morning, spending quality time in rehab focusing on everything, connecting my brain, my body, myself to rehab, and it really helped me recover a little faster because I had two or three heartburn together - sports hernia, ankle and right knee, so I had to take one step at a time, follow the little little things and here I am really happy to be on the ground," Surya added.
Speaking about his return to his home ground Wankhede Stadium, SKY said: "It's always exciting to come back to this place because it all started here, my whole cricketing journey started here and when I entered the hotel, went to the ground, it never felt like I left this place. The first day when doing my training with the boys and everyone around, it felt like I've been here since the IPL started."
"If you play this sport, you have to work hard, there is no substitute for hard work, but like I said at the beginning, I wanted to be a better version of myself. When I got injured, I realized what OI wanted. to work because I had 2-3 months to work on myself in terms of fitness and also everything in my body, so I pushed really hard at the time," SKY added.
Speaking about his rehab at NCA, SKY said: "I'm really grateful to the support staff at NCA, everyone, the coaches, the physios and everyone who took care of me right from the morning. For a few days I was angry to do the rehab, but they took it easy and understood really well, how I wanted to work, really grateful to them."
"Look, it's always difficult when your team is playing and you're sitting in a room watching the game. I can't say I didn't watch the game, I watched half the game because I slept on time when I was in Bangalore around 10:30 to 10:45. So I only watched half the innings and of course I watched the whole day after the game in highlights it was hard but at the same time but at the same time it gave me a lot of motivation and inspiration watching them (teammates) that yes they are going to play there and I have to work really hard on myself, my recovery and get there as soon as possible ", SKY concluded.
Suryakumar was recently cleared by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after undergoing sports hernia surgery in December and returned for the Mumbai Indians IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium.
But the big hitter's comeback proved to be a damp squab as he fell for a two-ball duck even as the five-time champions registered their first win of the tournament.
With one win from four matches, five-time champions Mumbai Indians are 8th in the points table, one place above RCB.
