ASOIF ends IBA membership, calls for replacement boxing body - Sportcal

The International Summer Olympic Federation (ASOIF), the Olympic sports governing body, has announced the exclusion of the International Boxing Association (IBA) body from its list of member federations.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on April 3 that the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision last June to withdraw the IBA's recognition was justified. This decision has now prompted ASOIF to act and withdraw. membership of a boxing organization in exile.

CAS rejected the IBA's appeal after the IOC withdrew its membership in June 2023, citing myriad financial, governance and ethical problems at the Swiss IBA. A warning was given about these in 2019, but since the IOC felt that the IBA had not done enough to fix the problems, the institution will no longer organize Olympic boxing.

Speaking at the SportAccord conference in Birmingham, UK, ASOIF president Francesco Ricci Bitti stated that national boxing federations and national Olympic committees must decide to find a suitable replacement for the IBA by 2025 at the latest.

In response, the IBA reiterated its commitment to promote the sport of boxing with or without an Olympic trophy, stating: "The IBA reiterates that it has already implemented significant governance and compliance reforms since the end of 2020. We are committed to the highest standards of transparency and integrity in the boxing community while delivering world-class events."

In response to the CAS decision, it has stated: "The IBA strongly rejects the CAS decision as it completely repeats the IOC's rhetoric despite sufficient evidence of progress being made. The IBA will act to protect its athletes and coaches by considering an appeal to the Swiss Federal Court.

The IOC is pushing boxing to the Paris 2024 Olympics, but there is a real risk that boxing will be blacklisted from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics if the parties involved cannot find a solution – it is not currently on the sports programme.

ASOIF's announcement came at the ASOIF General Assembly on April 9, held at SportAccord, where the body also confirmed the election of Ingmar De Vos as the new president.

In March, it was announced that De Vos, chairman of the governing body of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), would run unopposed to replace Ricci Biti, whose third and final term ends on 31 December.

De Vos, who is also an IOC member and sits on ASOIF's Council and Executive Committee, was the only candidate for the presidency, although each ASOIF full member body had the opportunity to nominate an executive body member for the position.
